Mr. Teguh Ganda Wijaya, Chairman of Sinar Mas Group, was born in 1944 in Indonesia and his ancestral home is located in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China. In the early years, he came back to China for education. In the 1960s, he graduated from Department of Mechanics, Peking University and returned to Indonesia to join Sinar Mas Group which was established by his father, Mr. Eka Tjipta Widjaja. He inherits his father’s spirit of diligence, frugality, integrity and credibility and makes outstanding contributions to the development of the Group’s core business, namely the four industries of pulp & paper, finance, real estate and agriculture & food processing. Sinar Mas Group now has 150,000 employees, with a total asset of over 20 billion USD. As a famous Indonesian consortium, it invests broadly across Asia, Europe and America.

Mr. Teguh Ganda Wijaya also serves as Chairman of Sinar Mas Group-APP, which is the biggest subsidiary of the Group and focuses on the integrated business of plantation-pulp-paper. APP boasts an annual output of more than 9 million tons of pulp and paper and 750,000 hectares fast-growing forests. With a total asset of more than 10 billion USD, APP has been among Top 10 paper producers in the world. Ever since it entered China market in 1992, APP has successively set up 18 pulp and paper enterprises and over 20 plantation farms in Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta. Nowadays, APP China can produce more than 5 million ton paper and paperboards each year.

The success of APP in China cannot be separated from its development strategy of “Plantation-Pulp-Paper Integration”. Here is the development strategy of APP made by Mr. Teguh Ganda Wijaya: Set up leading paper companies to promote the demand for high quality pulp products; set up leading pulp companies to promote the development of large-scale plantation industry; make comprehensive use of resources during the whole production process of plantation, pulp and paper, thus to form a virtuous cycle across the entire industry chain.

In 2005, APP China reached a turnover of RMB 16.8 billion and paid various taxes totaling RMB 5 billion. In 2003, Gold East Paper and Ningbo Zhonghua Paper under APP China took the first and second places in “100 Star Enterprises Invested by Overseas Chinese” and received grand commendation from the Chinese government. In 2004, Gold East Paper was honored to be among the first batch of “National Environment-Friendly Enterprises” as the only paper producer in all four nominees. After 15 years’ development, APP has had an asset of 7 billion USD in China. Gold East Paper is the most productive single plant of copperplate paper in the world. Ningbo Zhonghua Paper is the biggest industrial paper producer in China. Ningbo Asia Pulp & Paper is the biggest high-quality package paper producer in the world. Hainan Jinhai is the biggest pulp company in China. Yalong is the biggest paper product producer in China. APP also boasts Gold Hong Ye Paper, the biggest household paper producer in Asia, and Gold Hua Sheng Paper,the biggest carbonless copying paper producer in China.

While developing its business, APP is also actively pursuing win-win results between enterprise and society. APP has set scholarship and bursary funds in Peking University, Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication, Xiamen University Medical College, etc. It also plays an active role in offering financial assistance to central and local governments in cases of disaster relief, social donation, construction of Olympic venues, etc. Up till now, APP has made a total donation of around RMB 200 million.

Other companies under Sinar Mas Group like AFP have also made remarkable contributions to China’s economic development and social progress. The Bund Center built by Mr. Djafar Wijaya, the fifth child of Mr. Eka Tjipta Widjaja, has now become a new landmark building on the west bank of Huangpu River. The Westin Grand Hotel under his management is also one of just a few Super Five-Star hotels in Shanghai.

Due to his outstanding talents and remarkable achievements, Mr. Teguh Ganda Wijaya was granted Distinguished Executive Award by Indonesian National Management Association in 1989. In China, he also won the title of Honorary Citizen in Ningbo and Zhenjiang as well as the People’s Medal of Zhenjiang. As an entrepreneur with international fame, he was once received by Mr. Clinton and Mr. Jiang Zemin, former US and Chinese presidents. Ever since the time of Mr. Eka Tjipta Widjaja, the Wijaya family has always had deep friendship with Chinese premiers of different times (Zhou Enlai, Li Peng and Zhu Rongji) and received their kind and friendly reception for many times.
